2nd Mediterranean Scientific Conference
“CAROB TREE THE COMING BACK”
22 October 2023
RETHYMNO, PANORMO
The 2nd Mediterranean Scientific Conference “CAROB TREE THE COMING BACK” will take place at the Carob Mill in Panormo, on Sunday 22 October 2023. The Conference is organized by the Cultural Society of Panormo “Epimenides” and the CAROB OF CRETE, supported by the Region of Crete (Regional Fund), the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism the Ministry of Culture, as well as the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
It is an interdisciplinary conference, that will bring together researchers, academics, experts, representatives of public and private institutions, growers, and producers to share recent research data, innovations, and technologies related to carob as an object of chemical, biological, and pharmaceutical research, as a nutritional agent and as an ingredient in cooking. The ultimate goal is to optimally exploit the potential of carob, but also to create a sustainable carob-centered development model. In addition to Greece, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Egypt, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Morocco are represented.
In the area of Panormos, Rethymno, located in the center of the northern road axis, between the major cities of Crete, in the rural region of Rethymno (Mylopotamos), there is the unique – perhaps – old large Carob Mill of Crete, which, after its lease to the Cultural Society of Panormos ‘Epimenidis,’ was declared an industrial monument by the Ministry of Culture.
The Carob Mill, built in 1935 and operated as a carob processing unit for the region, played a significant role in the development of the local economy until it ceased its operation in 1967.
In 1996, the abandoned and dilapidated industrial building provided the impetus for the creation of a model space for art and culture, and thus, it operated from 1996.
As a venue for hosting various artistic, conference, and sports events, it gradually became the center of cultural activity in the region.
The restoration and conversion works of the Carob Mill began in 1998 with the architectural study provided by Panagiota Trimandili-Magan and were funded by the Region of Crete.
This space, owned by the Panormos Agricultural Cooperative, has been transformed into a significant cultural, exhibition, and conference center for all of Crete through the initiative and active participation of the non-profit cultural society “Epimenidis,” which was established in 1998 and is responsible for its management. To complete its development fully, there are plans to create an outdoor theater in the surrounding area, as well as a park featuring endemic plants and flowers of Crete.
